Many of you know that Ed Vanover, the manager of the Great Escape Bicycle Shop in Spartanburg is in a real bout with cancer. Ed has been diagnosed with throat cancer and he's been under going both chemotherapy and radiation treatment at the same time. Needless to say, it's taking a toll on him mentally and physically!! He hasn't been able to eat anything in 50 plus days, all total he's lost about 65 pounds. He spent a good portion of the last month in the hospital because of dehydration and the fact he has to be fed with a feeding tube. Yep, his spirits are getting a little low, so I'm asking you to take a few minutes and got down a get well wish for the ole' boy and snail mail it to his home address. Teresa will deliver the mail directly to him. Thanks again for helping lift Ed's spirits while he continues the fight with this dreaded disease!!

Lowe's Motor Speedway Time Trial Series is in full swing. Wednesday,
April 30, 2008 is the 2nd of nine races held between April and October.

Bill Wiseman, President of the Carolina Cycling Time Trial Association
states..."The Time Trial Series is increasingly becoming an event that
many cyclists look forward to. Unlike many of the other time trials, the
Lowe's
Motor Speedway Time Trial Series is open to all cyclists. They don't
need a special license nor do they need to be a "racer" to enjoy riding
their bike on the NASCAR track. Many cyclists come for the opportunity
to ride the track and when doing so they discover the fun and thrill of
a time trial."

A special event planned for April 30th is a visit from the Cervelo
Factory éRide demo van, hosted by Cool Breeze Cyclery. The Cervelo staff
will bring 30 road and TT bikes for test riding in a track setting. Test
rides available from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

We are just over a month away from Police Week. Last year we organized a
bicycle ride for Law Enforcement that started in Charlotte at CMPD HQ
and ended at the Police Memorial in Washington DC four days later. Only
four riders made the full trip and we learned a lot about cross country
journeys. It was quite a moving experience to join over a thousand
riders from the Police Unity Tour and ride into Washington DC together.
This year we will repeat the ride for those who would like to take on
the challenge while honoring their fellow officers. This is the year the
names of Sean Clark and Jeff Shelton will be added to the Police
Memorial so the ride will have extra special meaning.

While we are still putting details together, here is what we know for
now:
We will start Thursday or Friday (May 8 or 9) from CMPD HQ.
The route will be the same as last year:
a. Day 1: Charlotte to Asheboro (97 miles)
b. Day 2: Asheboro to South Boston, VA (95 miles)
c. Day 3: South Boston, VA to Richmond, VA (95 miles) then shuttle to
Fredericksburg, VA
d. Day 4: Fredericksburg, VA to Washington, DC (70 miles)
e. Day 5: Return to Charlotte. (unless you have a ride back on Day 4)
f. Rest stops will be provided about every 20-25 miles, allowing people
to ride a leg, and then rest in the support vehicle for a leg.
g. If someone just wants to ride 20 miles, or even 5, that’s fine too.
h. That’s because even hard core bikers probably aren’t up to
consecutive 100 mile days this early in the season
i. Speed will be in the 15-17 mph average so people can join us who
aren’t fast; however, if the group dwindles down to those who can
maintain a faster speed, we’ll pick it up
j. The ride will be NOT be escorted most of the way, we are able to pick
up Police escorts in some of the towns we pass thru.

The ride will be open to non-Law Enforcement riders, as well as Law
Enforcement, all along the route
Riders can join us for any or all of a day’s ride
For those joining along the route, transportation to and from the route
will be their responsibility
We will provide a way to get your bike back from DC if you end your ride
there.
We may have seats in vehicles to get you back from DC; if not you can
have a family member/friend come get you or there is always AMTRAK!
We will book motel rooms for those staying overnight on the ride.
The ride will end at the Police Memorial, a few blocks from the Capitol
in DC.

We are trying to raise funding for ride expenses. Just in case that
funding falls through, you should be prepared to pay all expenses
yourself. Last year we received no funding, participants paid for all
their expenses including lodging, food, and fuel for support vehicles.
All money donated by the public last year went to the Clark and Shelton
families.
This year we may be raising money to support the Police Memorial. If we
get the OK to join the Police Unity Tour riders on the last day we will
quite likely have a minimum fund raising commitment per rider, we are
trying to get corporate donations to cover that. If you know of
potential corporate sponsors for this event, help by spreading the word
and asking for funding, you might be surprised who will offer money!

We need support personnel as well as riders. If you can make the trip
and drive a support vehicle we would love to have you join us. If you
know someone who will donate the use of a support vehicle (motor home,
pickup, etc) then please put them in touch with me.

WHAT I NEED RIGHT NOW is a return email from anyone who is interested in
doing the ride or getting more information.

We continue to work out details. Please spread the word among your
cycling and Law Enforcement friends, here and elsewhere in NC, SC, and
VA.

Just kidding about the slumber party… but seriously, I REALLY need some help finding Host Housing for 15 PRO teams on Friday, May 2nd.

This year’s Steadman Hawkins Classic criterium (formerly Smith Barney Classic) is coming up on Friday, May 2nd (Spring Fling weekend).  We’ve agreed to provide housing for as many pro teams as possible.  This is for one night only (Friday) and requires very minimal involvement from the host homes.  These racers are serious about their sport and won’t be hanging around, coming in late, or asking for midnight snacks.  They’ll be on the road to their next race first thing Saturday morning.

If you are willing to help (please!) – send me an email as soon as possible with your name, phone number, address, email, and # available beds.  The team manager will contact you directly to arrange arrival time and get directions from you.

Thanks for any help that you can give.

More info about the race and Bike Month coming soon…

Best,

jean

With the weather forecast at 90% rain for tomorrow Saturday the 5th of April, unfortunately we have to cancel the Training Ride from Bikeways in Boiling Springs. With the 80 plus riders that have been showing up for the rides it would be a huge safety issue. Our next Training Ride is the 17th of May and will have a 70 mile ride with a good climb. When you return we will be grilling Hamburgers and Hot Dogs outside, Manny's will provide the goodies, potatoes salad, fries, cold drinks and all the trimmings. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on the 17th. Be careful out there.
Remember the "Ride of Silence" is on the 2nd of May.

Cycling friends...

Hope you'll join Richard White, a.k.a., The Rocket and myself Saturday as we cycle to Saluda and back!! The Rocket is know for speed so yes we'll
make sure your kept on course and to cool you off from maintaining the blistering pace set by the ole' Rocket, I'm buying spirits for all finishers at the El Mexicano restaurant after the ride. So come on out and join us as we prepare the rocket ship for the "Big Assault"!!

Ride description follows.

When : Saturday March 29th at 9:30 am

Where : Bike-Ways in Boiling Springs , SC on Hwy 9 .  From I85 bypass take Hwy 9 North ( exit 75 ) and Bike-Ways will be about 1 1/2 miles on the right .  The bike shop will be open for restrooms , coffee , treats and encouragement before the ride .

Ride info : Option 1 : We plan to follow the usual backroads up through Landrum to Tryon and then up Saluda Grade ( approximately a 4 mile climb with 1200 feet of climb - average grade of 5 - 6 % ) where we'll turn around and head back . This route will be around 69 - 70 miles and the average speed will be somewhere around 17 mph for the whole ride .

Option 2 :  We will add Hogback mountain after the Saluda Grade climb for those who wish to do a second climb ( approximately 5 miles and 1500 feet of climb for a 6% average grade ) . This option will make the total mileage about 80 miles . I plan to do both climbs for anyone interested .

Store stops : After we climb Saluda Grade we will stop at the Texaco station at the bottom . This is about 45 miles into the ride and probably about the 2 1/2 hour mark .

Please note that these are fairly difficult rides . The total climb for the two options will be in the 5 - 6,500 foot range .

Post ride treats : One of our wonderful cycling friends by the name of Dave Proctor has generously agreed to buy liquid refreshments for everyone at the El Mexicano restaurant after the ride . He wanted to make it dependent on who could beat me to the top of Saluda Grade but I told him that wouldn't be fair to so many of you who are vertically challenged !!!!
