Hello Cycling Friends,
 
Well the New Year is here and the Foothills Cyclists have put together 5 bicycle
rides that are guaranteed to get you off the couch and on the road!! All the rides
 will start from the BikeWays shop in Spartanburg on Hwy 9, be complete with preride
 goodies, sags, and a great meal at Manny's at the conclusion of each ride.  Hope
you'll join us for some or all the rides!!!
 
 
   On January 19th the First of Five Foothills Cyclists Training Rides will be leaving Bikeways
at 9am. The Training are Scheduled for February 9 , March 15th , April 5th and May 17th .
    Bikeways will open its doors at 8am on January 19th with Hot Coffee and Hot
Chocolate and Goodies. As always there will be three fully marked routes, 66 miles,
 42 miles and 28 miles. The 66 mile and the 42 mile will have fully stocked SAG stops.
 Bikeways will be having a 10% sale on Clothing and Accessories. As always
there will be some great Raffle prizes.
    After the ride Manny's Restaurant will be serving Chicken over Rice with Salad and cold drinks and
 it's another one of Manny's Great Meals.
    The ride cost is $15.00 for non-members and $13.00 for members.

cumculative elevation gain of 8900 feet. Grades reach 14% The metric is
shorter but includes the major climbs. The 30 mile is hilly but does not
go into the mountains.

Profits benefit the Foothills Sexual Trauma Center.

Event_Description: A one-day cycling tour event for serious cyclists who
wish to improve stamina and touring skills, while showcasing Upstate South
Carolina and parts of North Carolina and raising funds for the homeless.
Funds from the challenge will help Miracle Hill Ministries care for
homeless adults and children. Hundreds of South Carolina's most needy
individuals and families are housed each night in six shelters located in
Greenville, Pickens, Cherokee and Spartanburg Counties.

Mark your calendar now for the annual Upstate Ride of Silence.  -- Wednesday, MAY 21
Kimberly Morgan and I will be providing specific details closer to the date, but we wanted you to have this on you calendar.   We hope you will take a day off from your training to join us in a slow ride to remember those who have lost their lives or been injured in traffic cycling accidents.  It will help us make a unified statement on the need for safer cycling roads for the Greenville/Spartanburg/Cherokee/Union area.  We will again hold it in the Greer area between Spartanburg and Greenville.  Attached is a photo from last year's event.

Gears & Gables:

Rutherford County cyclists are once again joining forces with Rutherford Housing Partnership to provide both a challenge for cyclists and funds to help the local nonprofit provide urgent repairs to homes.

Gears & Gables is a one-day 125-mile ride around Rutherford County that is expected to attract 50 regional cyclists Saturday, June 28. This will be an invitation-only ride, but RHP hopes the event will become an annual event that will attract hundreds.

Event_Description: This rides starts out at Mars Hill College in North
Carolina. There are options of a 100 mile ride with approx 9,600 feet of
total climbing with a section of about 20 miles that is downhill. They
also have a metric century with only 6,200 of climbing and a 25 and 11
mile family ride. The fee is only $25 with supported rest stops and sag
wagon. You will get a t-shirt, water bottle, goody bag and a free meal
afterwards. There is also a drawing for prizes after the ride.

Please feel free to contact me for more details. This is the 3rd year for
the ride and I have completed the 100 mile ride the previous 2 years.

Event_Description: Flight of the Dove is a cycling event benefiting 
Hospice of Laurens County.  There will be a metric century, a 30 mile 
ride, and a short leisure ride.  The metric route tours into the beautful 
Sumter National Forest on lightly travelled and well paved roads.  There 
are ample rest stops and SAG as well as a post ride meal.
 
The event leaves from Bailey Memorial Stadium on the Presbeterian College

Tour de Pumpkin

100K-62 Miles
The 100K ride is a relentless hill climbing experience with over 4,400 feet of climbing on this loop. The ride quickly leaves the town of Rutherfordton and puts the rider on some of the most beautiful and lightly traveled country roads around. Prior training for this ride is a must as this is not an easy ride, but for those looking for a challenge it is the ride for you. The ride has two rest stops at approximately 24.7 miles and 42 miles. Both stops have a restroom or Port-a-John. A map of the course is provided below.

50K-31 Miles
The 50K ride follows the same route as the 100K for the first stretch, then breaks off, then finishes on the final stretch the 100K. The 50K is basically a mini version of the 100K with plenty of hills to work your legs. The loop includes more than 2,200 feet of climbing.
