Giro di Pez: Vasto To Pesco
Message by Richard Pestes I’m happy to report I found a negroni last night- a good one too. A simple stroll into the town center at Peschici revealed a fine assortment of cafes and bars – the good kind with the chairs out front so you can enjoy the view. It was the perfect 'rest' for today's big drive from Vasto to Pescocostanzo along the entire corsa...
Giro'08 St.7: Bosisio Triumphs, The Killer Warns
Message by Dave Aldersebaes The 2008 Giro decided to do it's first bit of muscle flexing, and the big boys showed themselves, at least in part. Some big names went off the business end of the race, and the first sparks began to fly with big names like Di Luca, Contador, Piepoli, and Ricco mixed in with some not-so-big names like Kiryienka, and the somewhat unlikely winner, LPR's Gabriele Bosisio! Read on to find out how the upstart took the day!
Giro di Pez: To The Rooftop!
Message by Richard Pestes It’s good to be back online from the press room here at the stage 6 finish in Peschici. After yesterday’s big journey clear across the country, I’m recharged and ready to join the fray, and once again today did not disappoint – starting with dinner last night, a ride along the coast this morning, and an awesome view point for today’s finish…
Giro’08 St.6: Visconti’s Big Break!
Message by Gordan Cameron Aaah, we haven’t had one of these for a while! A Grand Tour peloton turns a blind eye as a monster escape screams up the road and rewrites the general classification. Somewhere, Claudio Chiapucci is smiling ….. as a younger Italian hero lives the dream.
EuroTrash Thursday!
Message by Matt Conn Ciao Bella! It’s the Giro and PEZ are in the thick of the action in beautiful Italy. We’ve got the wrap from the week as well as all the bone breaks and bickering. So before you check out the Distrazioni del Giorno, you better check out the EuroTrash!
Giro Di Adam: Happy High Road
Message by Edmond Hood Whilst the rest of Scotland’s manhood watched Glasgow Rangers play Zinit Saint Petersburg in the final of the Uefa soccer Cup final, our man Ed Hood gave his cell phone account another hammering, as he interviewed High Road’s Adam Hansen on the day that Oleg Tinkoff’s dream finally came true, thanks to Pavel Brutt.
Giro'08 St.5 - Brute Force Gets It For Brutt
Message by Jered Gruber It's not too terribly often that a break this early in a Grand Tour manages to go the distance, but it happened, and the finale was nothing short of spectacular as Tinkoff's Pavel Brutt managed to wrest free of his breakmates after David Millar's chain snapped just outside of the ultimo chilometro, just ahead of the ravaging field.
Giro di Pez: Expect The Unforgettable
Message by Richard Pestes My drive from Agrigento to today’s start in Pizzo took close to 12 hours, the B&B had sketchy internet, and now I’m up the road in Cosenza, watching the stage end on tv… But chasing the Giro isn’t just about a bike race, it’s a an experience of another kind, there's always something new to be learned...
Giro'08 St.4: Cavendish Gets His First!
Message by Dave Aldersebaes It looked like it would be another day for the sprinters - one of the few and proud profiles conducive to the fast twitchers - and we were not disappointed as young Mark Cavendish showed once again that he isn't the future - he's now.
Toolbox: Fatigue and Riding Styles
Message by Dr. Stephen Cheung, Ph.D. Every spring it happens. After a winter of mostly solo rides either commuting or indoors on the trainer doing intervals, the first few group rides of the year are just brutal reawakenings to the realities of the highly variable nature or racing. What are the neuromuscular differences, if any, between hard constant efforts and group races?
EuroTrash Monday!
Message by Jered Gruber At long last the Giro has begun and we all turn our heads daily to watch the ever entertaining rolling carnival through Italy - and life is good. We've got lots of Giro to report on and a few other tidbits worth chatting about, so grab that last donut or give it to me. Read ON!
Giro’08 St.3: Battling Bennati Beats Bruised Bunch!
Message by Alastair Hamilton Today was billed as one of the few days for the sprinters and it didn’t disappoint! Names like McEwen, Cavendish and Zabel where the bookmaker’s choice for the win, Daniele Bennati wasn’t on the tip of many people’s tongues, but he showed the sprint specialist what it was all about on a day that staying upright was the hardest thing to do!
Giro Di Adam: The Joys Of Sicily
Message by Edmond Hood As the Giro winds around Sicily, PEZ has a man right there in the heart of the peloton; Aussie Elite TT champion, High Road’s Adam Hansen. He took time to talk to Ed Hood after the Cobra had struck on Stage Two.
Giro di PEZ: In The Gods' Valley
Message by Richard Pestes Last night was another late one… I made it out of the press room at 10, back to the hotel at 10:30, shower and out to dinner at 11:00, then stopped in for a night cap at a local enoteca – and next thing I know, it’s 2:30 for lights out. Needless to say, today’s start was somewhat sluggish, but I’m now in Agrigento awaiting the finish.
Giro’08 St.2: Rockin’ Ricco Romps It!
Message by Gordan Cameron He talks the talk, and today, at least, Saunier-Duval’s mouth from the south walked the walk. As the finishing hills wrecked the peloton all over the road, Riccardo Ricco staked his claim to the Giro with a ballsy win.
